I have always wanted to have a neighbor. Howdy neighbors. You know, before we begin the closing ceremonies, I have to say one thing. Some of you have been throwing shade at old white guys like me and Mr. McFeely. And I just want to say it hurts our feelings. And the words of my good friend, Justin Bieber, I think you should just go love yourselves. All right, enough of that crap. It is time for the closing ceremonies. And let’s kick it off the right way. Back by popular demand, let’s hear it for the Get Lit Players. Hey, Frank. Hey, Frank. Hi, Frank. Nice to meet you. I feel a change in Gainesville. A change in the brains of the same people I shared coffee and lobster with. A change that stems from the pain of silenced youth and broken policy. Documentarians, physicists, journalists. We are all poets speaking different languages. We are all unapologetic. We are social change in 3D. Virtual reality when virtually reality is what we make of it. Quite frankly, Frank, I never knew I could feel so at home away from home. That brown is just a color and not another stereotype. Look around. Do you know who you’re existing with? Do you know the story behind that business card, behind that name tag? We are all poets with different stories inside the same book. Take a look. And imagine. Imagine if the world knew Frank. Imagine if all of Florida, Washington, New York, North Carolina and California all ate progressive dinner. The world is starving. The world is starving for answers. And your words are food for thought. Let us say great. Let us say great. Say, Frank, nice to meet you. The Frank I know is honest. Not so much simple. He’s been around a lot. He’s been to California, to London, to New York, but he is right here in Gainesville, Florida. The Frank I know tells you exactly what’s on his mind. Doesn’t care what your disagreements are because he has an entire community behind him from socially aware virtual reality to… Let me say that again. From socially aware virtual reality to social reality. From socially aware virtual reality. To seven minutes with your own health, to hunting authenticity, he has taught us as much as every single one of us has taught him. And Frank, you really know how to dance. And lip-sync. Unafraid to bust out the classics, but staying progressive at dinner, having enough drinks to rant about Donald Trump, but shutting his mouth with some good pulled pork when he’s speaking too loud. Like all of us, Frank is only human, but that didn’t stop him from teaching me about all the things I never even knew existed. Showing me what I should have said when they told me my story didn’t matter, that it was lost amongst the endless droning sea of voices trying to drown yours. Frank, Frank, you are not just a person. You transcend anything said in this. What’s this called again? The hippodrome. Frank, what the heck is a hippodrome? Hey Frank, nice to meet you. I never knew I could gain so much here from LA to Gainesville. Thank you for bringing us together, for showing us we are not alone, that I am not alone, that my views can be shared by people who might not share my background. Thank you for the bonds made over warm pools, hard orange sodas, and early morning breakfast. Thank you for bringing together classic and contemporary music, violin and hip-hop, for showing me the poetry and documenting the lives of people I never met. Thank you for giving us a chance to meet, a chance to exchange business cards, numbers and Facebook profiles. Thank you for showing us the power in unity, the power of communities united. Frank, we thank you. Get lit layers! Good job. Good job. Get lit layers! Thank you. Like I said, dope ass rhymes. Alright, now to present the award for best crew. She is the founder and president of Spitfire Strategies. You have heard her name from the stage several times. You have heard it whispered in the halls. It is written on the walls of the men’s room. So I can tell you you are in for a good time. Kristen Grimm! Hello everyone. I am Kristen. I help with the program here, among other things. And where did I leave this thing? I am going to go to the closet because all good things seem to come out of this closet here. Let’s take a look. Yes! Just where I left it last year. So, since the get go, Frank, we started Crews because we wanted people to come and feel connected. And our second year last year, we decided to do a crew award. And I, because I am on the program committee, got assigned to give out the award. Now, coincidentally, I was also a crew captain last year. And our crew name was Crew de Ta. So when I got up to announce the award last year, I was true to brand because I am a very good communicator. So, oddly, I announced that we won Crew de Ta. I won the award last year. And you will notice that the thing we have started is on this awesome trophy is last year we heard from Jenny Lawson. And when she spoke to us, she had taxidermy that she petted the entire time. So I found a taxidermy Grimm Reaper Mouse for Kristen Grimm to glue onto this trophy. So then this year, they said, hey, Kristen, you should say something from the stage. And I was like, great, they’re like, you can announce the crew again. And I was like, awesome, two years in a row, I’m going to win. But they were like, no, you’re not a crew captain. So, fine. So this trophy does not have to be packed. You’ll be glad to know. It can stay here, but you do have to decorate it with something memorable. I’m not sure how you’re going to get this exactly on it, but I look forward to that maker conference you’re going to go to. So we like to think about the Esprit de Cor, who played well with others, who was mad on social media, and who were just generally awesome. And that would be Changeville Crusaders this year. This is so exciting. I just barely stopped crying over Kurt’s talking. I’m crying all over again because you’re all so nice. And we had the most amazing crew. And I can’t thank every single one of you by name. I know some of them have already left. I will thank them individually. But thank you for putting up with a million years of experience. And I’m so excited to be back. I’m so excited to be back. I’m so excited to be back. I’m so excited to be back. I’m so excited to be back. I’m so excited to be back. But thank you for putting up with a million emails for me. I know it was really annoying. And special shout out to Kathy Kingsley-Momburger for our awesome buttons and branding. And to all of you, it was so much fun. And thank you, Frank, for making me feel like waking all of us on our crew. I feel like more of the tribe, more a part of the tribe than ever. Thank you so much. You are the snow vacation. Okay, now to present the $10,000 Frank Prize that you determined with your texts. She is a professor in the Department of Public Relations here at the University of Florida. You’ve heard her name from the stage. It’s been whist- No, I can’t do that. Linda Hahn. Thank you. Thank you. It’s such an honor. Am I on? Yeah. That is. Okay. Thank you. It’s such an honor to be able to present this award. And I know Frank Carrell is looking down somewhere and he is so happy. I wanted to let you know that there is a very deliberate process behind this. A group of practitioners and academics equally balanced vets all the papers that are submitted to the prize competition. And we take our job very seriously. We look at the idea behind the paper. We look at the research methodology, the statistical analysis or whatever type of analysis there is. And we also have a long discussion about what is the takeaway for public interest communications. And I look forward to being on the review panel every year. It’s so exciting. I immediately start talking about the papers of my classes. I share them with my graduate students. I make my husband read them. It’s really a fun and exciting process. But the actual winner is chosen by you, which is also really exciting. So without further ado. Dr. Troy Campbell, Solicitor Version! Is Troy here? Where’s Troy? I guess the only thing I’m going to say is I’m an academic who originally was a practitioner for a while. So I love talking to people because I think that you guys have the insights that really make great projects. Whenever I talk, I say the best way to do a research project is to go find a handful of insights by people who are out in the field, who really know it, who actually know the things that are going to work. Take that into the lab, grind it up, and come out with this pearl of wisdom, the shiny little strong diamond. So if you guys, which you already have from talks here and everything, if you guys just come up to me, tweet at me, email me, these little wisdoms, my research gets better, the world gets better, and we connect academia and practitioners together in a really fruitful way. Thank you for selecting me. You guys are awesome. Alright, in a moment, we’re going to show you a video that captures all the great Frank moments. Thank you for everyone who was tweeting your moments and Instagramming your moments. We’re going to show you a video that captures some of those and more in just a second, but a little bit of housekeeping before we get there. Market on your calendars now. Frank 2017, March 1st through 3rd. March 1st through 3rd. There will be no room blocks reserved at the hotels, so if you want to get a good spot at Camp Hamp, up at the Camp Denin, book now. Otherwise, you’re going to be at the Hilton with all the people on the buses. So that’s right. Nothing, there’s anything wrong with that. But book now. March 1st through 3rd. Alright, you got that? Alright, good. And one other thing, one other thing before the video. It is really an amazing task to hold this all together from the stage. So I think we should have one more round of applause for our host, Liz Winstead. As I said to Liz earlier, you are the glue that we all sniff. H-R-R! So, with that, no more official business. Enjoy our closing video. On the last day of our time, let’s spend as much time as we should, through our open hearts, trying to make the world so good. It is beautiful and right, and I feel hollow, harrowed, sorrow. I’ll be staying up all night, it is beautiful and right. Cause going home can make you lost, it takes away your fight, it makes you want to cry. It is beautiful and right. I know that you must go, but don’t be long, it tears my heart when you are gone. It is a perfect part of life, and I’ll be holding from some past days. That’s what Frank is all about. Old friends, new friends, heroes, we all come together. It is a secret, it is a secret part of life. Please clap, please clap! Oh my God! Oh my God! I know that all of us have an idea, and if you can imagine what the world would look like, if all of us took our one good idea and brought it to life. I’ll be tomorrow, I’ll see your brilliant side, and it builds me with delight. You don’t always have to act. You don’t always have to say something. Sometimes you just need to support, and sometimes you just need to get the fuck out of the way. I know that you must go, but don’t be long, it tears my heart when you are gone. They say we’ll be alright, and I believe it too low, it isn’t true, but it helps me sleep tonight. And they say we’ll be alright. Cause I’m broken over missing you, you are my heart’s delight. What you gotta realize is that systems are perfectly designed for the results they attain. And so the question becomes how do we turn all this knowledge into something that feels authentic? I know that you must go, but don’t be long, it tears my heart when you are gone. It doesn’t take days or years to change the world or reach your goals, it simply takes you. Don’t let time take you. You take time, I’m taking time, talking about time, and giving my time to you, my time is not precious. My time is not gold. My time is only valuable when I share it with you. May your love and warmth and light be the last things in your sight. It is beautiful and right. Thank you.
